Keep Steady Time

Metronome

Everything you can play is worth more in time. Set the pulse, shape the accents, then let the speed and gap trainers do the work a practice partner would.

The Method

How to Practise With a Click

Start slower than feels useful

If you can't play it cleanly at 60, you can't play it at 120 — you can only play it fast and wrong.

Aim to bury the click

When your note lands exactly on the tick, the tick seems to disappear. That's the target, not "close enough".

Move the accent around

Set the click on 2 and 4 instead of every beat. Suddenly you're keeping time, not following it.

Use the gap trainer

Silence is the real test. Two bars on, two bars off — if you're still together when it returns, the time is yours.
